A NEW CHALLENGE

All of Alice's artistic output involves an element of personal challenge; playing with preconceptions and pushing herself to learn new and unlikely performance skills; from close-up magic to aerial hoop. Her previous performance challenge, "The Trans Lady Sings", involved attempting to become an opera singer with no previous musical experience and was born out of a "Developing Your Creative Practice" grant supported by Arts Council England's DYCP programme.

In 2023 Alice took her previous show “Speaking Out and Fitting In!” Over to Le Printemps Anglophone Festival in Avignon for her very first European performance. This led to a return trip in 2024 to Théâtre Au Chapeau Rouge with “Trans Lady Sings!”, These performances in Avignon spurred Alice towards her current challenge, “The Literal Translation”; which involves her trying to overcome another real childhood fear; speaking publicly in another language…

FROM TRANS TRILOGY to TRANS TETRALOGY

(and yes; it’s a real word!)

2025 witnessed research and the first mini scratch performances for “The Literal Translation”. The full show premieres in 2026; joining “Illuminating Alice”, “Speaking Out and Fitting In” and “Trans Lady Sings” in rep.

Alice’s full Trans Tetralogy has been supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

Performance Poet, Alice d’Lumiere, is an experienced writer and comedienne; however for someone working as a communicator she is, like many British people, embarrassingly monolingual.

In 2023 Alice was invited to take her Transgender themed show Speaking Out and Fitting In! to ‘Le Printemps Anglophone Festival’ in Avignon, where despite performing a whole solo work in English, she found herself unable to even order a coffee in French without creating chaos.

The Literal Translation is her playful, silly, but absurdly honest response to this failure; a piece about late life learning, shifting identity, non-conforming voices, gendered language and romanticizing the exotic.

For Alice’s last show she learned opera to overcome a childhood fear of singing, this time her challenge is speaking in another language.

A bilingual, autobiographical show combining gender-fluid prose, verse, comedy and song with some foolhardy attempts at actual French!
